HOSPITAL staff at Queen Alexandra were called in at the last minute to help deal with patients who were diverted from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust after a power cut yesterday.
A major incident was declared yesterday morning resulting in the Southampton hospital issuing a statement asking people not to attend unless it was an emergency.
The fall-out impacted on QA staff who were drafted in to help with the patients sent over to QA.
Paul Bostock, delivery director at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: ‘Fifteen patients were cared for at Queen Alexandra Hospital after being diverted from University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust following a power failure yesterday.
‘Although our emergency department was busy, the extensive plans we have in place for incidents such as this meant all patients were well supported and cared for and no operations were cancelled at QA as a result.
‘Thank you to all of our staff for their efforts, some of whom came in early or on days off to ensure all of our patients continued to receive the best possible care.’
