There were smiles all round as an annual firework display returned to the city.
Thousands of people went to the free show at King George V playing fields in Cosham last night.
A huge bonfire, made up from donated wood, was lit by the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth, Cllr Lynne Stagg, with help from nine-year old Emelia Tyrrell.
Cllr Stagg said: ‘People have come from all over the city. It’s brilliant, an absolutely fantastic event.’
Pre-firework entertainment was put on by radio station The Breeze, and saw Tina Barrett from S Club 7 and band Next of Kin, from X Factor fame, take to the stage.
Next of Kin members - brothers Nathan, Mark and Kieran Bass – also spent time greeting fans after their show.
Best friends Shanice Crossley, six, and Tyler Holcombe, five, were overjoyed to meet the band.
Shanice, from Lake Road, said: ‘It was fantastic.’
Cosham ward councillor Aiden Gray was also enjoying the display.
Cllr Gray said: ‘I’ve been coming to this display all my life. To me it is so important and something we should be proud of. It is a celebration for the city. It’s about the council giving something back to the residents.’
Many families from across the city were making the most of the evening.
One family were also celebrating a 10th birthday. Kaitlen Blythe was enjoying a birthday treat with her sisters Jessica, 12, Bryani, 11, older brother Daniel Law, 30, and his wife Nicky.
Kaitlen said: ‘The best bit of my birthday was getting a Chopper but I like the fireworks, too, because they are so colourful.’
Brother and sister Katie-Anne Waring, 11, and Jack, seven, were also having fun.
Katie-Anne said: ‘I liked the fireworks. I have only ever seen one display before but this is the best yet.’
Jack added: ‘I’m looking forward to getting some candy floss. It’s tasty.’
