TEAMS of students are set to race human-powered submarines.

Twelve teams of university students are taking part in the second European International Submarine Races, held at defence firm QinetiQ’s ocean basin, in Gosport.

The basin is the biggest covered water space in Europe and will see the teams put their engineering skills to the test.

Each team pilot will put on Scuba gear and pedal the submarine underwater around the huge slalom course. UK teams are competing between July 7 and 11, along with those from America, Germany, the Netherlands and New Zealand.
