SWORD-SWALLOWER Ian Brown got a mouthful at the Kings Theatre, Southsea, last night when he made a special guest performance.

The 29-year-old amazed audience members when he swallowed a sword during Circus of Horrors’ one-night-only show.

He was invited to take part in the performance by the group’s famous sword swallower, Hannibal Hellmurto, who first introduced Ian to the concept at a workshop in the Kings Theatre last year.

Ian – who lives in Ryde, Isle of Wight, but is originally from Portsmouth – has spent the past 12 months perfecting his skills based on the advice he received at the workshop.

And he has continued to keep in touch with Hannibal while learning the technique, asking for advice and tips when needed.

Ian, who hopes to stage his own sword-swallowing shows in the near future, said: ‘I was very excited about it all beforehand because I knew it would be great fun.

‘And it was interesting to see how things worked backstage and learn more about how tricks are performed.’
