AN ILLEGAL landlord must pay almost £800 for renting a house without a licence.
Jason Parker, managing director of Bernards estate agent, was found guilty at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court of renting a four-storey house in Victoria Road North, Southsea, to more than five tenants, without permission from Portsmouth City Council.
He was fined 525 and ordered to pay 246 towards the council's costs.
The council may enforce an interim management order, which would see Parker lose all rent from the property for several years.
Portsmouth's councillor for housing, Cllr Steven Wylie, said: 'We had concerns about the safety of the people living in the house and court action was essential to ensure Mr Parker gets the necessary licence.
'It highlights to all landlords in Portsmouth that licences are essential.'
All homes rented to multiple tenants must be licensed, to ensure landlords are 'fit and proper, and homes meet all minimum standards, under the Housing Act 2004
