Is it time Southern Water was now taken into public ownership?

Have your say

When will Southern Water begin to take proper responsibility for systematically dumping sewage into our precious fragile SSSI Langstone Harbour (Shock after harbour filled with sewage, Sept 17)?

The latest incident was due to a power failure.

On August 27 it was because there was too much rain.

This year there have been 291 releases. That is more than one a day.

So what are the regulators doing about this?

We know that the Environment Agency is conducting an investigation, but will the outcome of that investigation result in fines that will simply be passed to the consumer?

What about Ofwat? I understand it too is conducting an investigation, so when will we see the outcome?

Hayling Island campaigner Mark Coates is absolutely right – we need to know discharge volumes regularly reported, not just duration.

This needs to be available to the public via the Langstone Harbour Board website.

Most importantly of all, Southern Water should be taken into public ownership.
