Israeli firm will provide armour for Royal Navy's newest frigates

Plasan has signed a contract with BAE Systems to produce the armour for the Type 26 Global Combat Ships.

Armour production for the first three ships is due to begin later this year, with the vessels being constructed in Scotland.

The new City-class warships are touted as being the most advanced frigates in the world.

A total of eight will be built, which are expected to be based at the navy’s base in Plymouth.

Once completed, the ships will replace the navy’s ageing Duke-class of anti-submarine warfare vessels. They will provide the Senior Service with an increased capability and flexibility, with a larger flight deck and hangar than previous frigate models.

Combined with the cheaper Type 31 general purpose frigates, the new ships will form the back bone of future naval operations.
