‘It was amazing’ says Portsmouth’s hope in The Great British Bake Off

BAKING enthusiast Enwezor Nzegwu hopes to wow the judges with his culinary skills in this year’s Great British Bake Off.

The business consultant at the University of Portsmouth has landed a place in the smash-hit TV show.

He’s hoping his creations will impress the judges Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry.

The 39-year-old is up against 11 competitors and was chosen from 20,000 applicants because of his top macaron making abilities.

And Enwezor, of Southsea, is well known among work colleagues as the man who likes to bring homemade treats to meetings.

Talking about his time during the filming of the series, the father-of-four said: ‘Being on Great British Bake Off has been the most amazing experience.

‘I’ve learned so much and made the most fantastic friends. I couldn’t believe I was selected.

‘I’d watched the programme and thought I knew what it involved, but it’s much more intense, more demanding.

‘I didn’t think it would be so hard, but it has been an incredible experience – I’ve loved it.’

Because the programme has not been aired yet, Enwezor is sworn to secrecy over how far he gets.

Each week one contestant is booted off by judges Paul – whose major bugbear is pastry with a soggy bottom – and Mary.

But Enwezor described how it was tough taking criticism from the cooking experts.

He said: ‘I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me, it was awful, just awful. All the people on the show are just fantastic.

‘They are careful to select people who can bake but who are not in it for fame.

‘It’s all about the skills – we are all just baking geeks – so it was really tough to take the feedback sometimes.’

Enwezor says his strength is the technique he puts into his baking and that he isn’t so keen on making things look pretty.

‘I love making things like macarons or eclairs and enjoy a degree of technical difficulty,’ he said.

Contestants have to submit their recipes for each week’s challenge, including cakes, bread, crackers and puddings, in advance.

The show kicks off on BBC1 next Wednesday and the final will air on October 8.

This year’s show will include a spin-off programme each Friday called The Extra Slice with the baker who doesn’t make it further being the star guest.
