Landlords are being urged to make sure properties they own meet new legal requirements.
As of October 1, all rented premises must have working smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms fitted.
Landlords will be responsible for ensuring that all alarms are in full working order at the start of every new tenancy.
Any landlord found to be breaching the regulations could receive a fine of up to £5,000. Research has shown individuals are four times more likely to die during a house fire which hasn’t had a working smoke or CO alarm installed in it.
