SOUTHSEA library has been closed just one week after its official opening, because its roof is leaking.

The building in Palmerston Road, which opened last Thursday, was shut to the public at10.45am after staff noticed water pouring through the roof.

Roofers and maintenance staff are working on the problem, and Portsmouth City Council hopes it will reopen later today.

The council’s leader for culture, Cllr Lee Hunt, said: ‘It’s not leaking into the main section of the library, so little damage has been done. But we don’t know why this has happened yet. The roof was being made lightning-resistant, so perhaps that’s it. It has rained much more heavily than this and the roof hasn’t leaked before.’
