Reverend Kate Macfarlane, Anglican minister of Hart Plain Church, Waterlooville, talks about the church’s Christmas appeal

At Hart Plain Church we are sending shoeboxes filled with toys, toiletries, teddy bears and warm clothing to children who won’t receive any other presents this Christmas.

When they receive these gifts, their eyes light up.

They are so pleased that someone has taken the time to pack this shoebox full of gifts just for them.

How can you help?

We’re collecting donations to fill the boxes with.

These are some of the things that can go into the boxes: cuddly toys, toothbrushes, toothpaste, bars of wrapped soap and bathroom flannels.

Other items which disadvantaged children would love to have include hats, gloves, scarves, tennis balls, crayons or felt-tip pens, drawing paper and colouring books.

And we’re also collecting small toys suitable for boys including toy cars and trucks, passenger planes or similar things.

Football cards are also popular.

You could also donate presents with little girls in mind, such as small jewellery sets, dolls, skipping ropes or hair accessories.

We’re also collecting empty shoeboxes and Christmas wrapping paper to decorate the boxes.

On Tuesday, November 10 at 7pm, we’ll be meeting in the church to wrap and fill the boxes ready to be sent out to the children in time for Christmas.

Do come and join us if you are able to.

Donations can be brought along to the church that night or dropped off beforehand if you would prefer to do it that way.

This is something that our church has been involved in for quite a few years and I think it’s a great way of showing these children that they haven’t been forgotten and that we do care.
