LETTER OF THE DAY: Gosport needs it's own A&E Unit

As a longtime Gosport resident I am proud to support Gosport Labour Party's campaign for an A&E in our town (Labour vows to campaign for new A&E department, Feb 6).

We used to have a hospital until it was shut down, a bad mistake.

If it was needed then, it is needed now.

The NHS, and the whole welfare state, was created by a Labour Government directly after the Second World War.

If we could do that then, why not this now? And what have we lost as a nation if we cannot?

Caroline Dinenage MP immediately wrote off the idea but as our MP and as a health minister she should be supporting it, or at least offering her own solutions (New hospital could be ‘a quicker solution’ for emergencies say Labour - but MP rubbishes idea).

That she will not simply shows the lack of political will and imagination in this joke of a government.

Henry David Thoreau famously wrote: ‘In the long run men only hit what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high.’

I don’t know about you, but I am sick of politicians aiming no higher than their next photo-op or pay rise.

The people of Gosport, and of this nation, deserve - and demand - so much more.
