LETTER OF THE DAY: University is a vital part of Portsmouth
We want people to associate the University of Portsmouth with excellence and a determination to strive to improve in everything that we do.
We are making progress. Last year the university was awarded Gold in the first ever government assessment of university teaching, putting us on a par with Oxford and Cambridge – as The News commented at the time.

But we became a university in 1992 – a year in which South Africa was still the country of apartheid and email was unknown.
The world has changed significantly since 1992 but the university has not updated its public image.
The investment in the university’s profile is vital to our future and strengthens our ability to gain greater recognition for our world-class research and teaching that is making a local and global impact.
No-one in the city benefits if the university struggles.

The proposed savings of between five and seven per cent will help us to become more efficient and enable us to further improve the educational experience we provide our students.
Our students and the city deserve nothing less.
