REPORTS of wet clothing near the Hot Walls led to lifeboat crews being sent out in the early hours of this morning.

The independent lifeboat run by the Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service was called at 2.40am today after Solent Coastguard received reports of wet clothing found on the Hot Walls next to the Round Tower, near to the entrance of Portsmouth Harbour.

The coastguard requested the launch of the Gosport Lifeboat and Gosport ILB, both boats were initially tasked to search the shoreline and water between Fort Monkton on the Gosport side across to the Round Tower.

The lifeboats carried out an extensive search of the waters and shoreline but nothing was found.

The search was then widened eastwards towards South Parade Pier and continued east as far as the Royal Marine museum near Eastney beach.

The search ended at 4.15am.
