Link to '˜mainland' now a car park

The old bridge did open to allow minor shipping to sail between Portsmouth and Langstone Harbours but the new bridge did not have this facility.

It was opened in 1927 and was for many years the only way on or off Portsea Island.

With modern traffic requirements and the building of the motorway, the west side of the bridge was demolished in the early 1970s and a roundabout built over the creek. For some days Portsmouth had a permanent connection to the mainland which, I suppose, it still has as Portscreek passes under the roundabout via a piped tunnel.

The modern view of the surroundings and much greenery has invaded the space where the old bridge crossed Portcreek. The space where the trams, cyclists and cars once crossed is now a car park.
