An accident on the westbound carriageway of the M27 near Fareham caused a ten-mile jam for drivers today.

Queues built up quickly following the crash involving three vehicles just after 5am. Three people were hurt in the accident.

Some drivers were able to use the hard shoulder to get past the scene but traffic was soon tailed back as far as Havant as emergency services dealt with debris and an oil spill on the motorway.

Drivers were urged to seek alternative routes along the A27.

Police said that the eastbound carriageway was open. And shortly after 7.30am, all lanes westbound had reopened although long queues remained.

Eyewitnesses described the crash as serious. Teri Eddy posted on our Facebook page: ‘Was right behind it - looked really bad. Emergency services doing a great job. I hope no one was too badly hurt.’

And at 6.45am Dave Kircher said: Just went past it and all shut still, Looks a right mess, Traffic not moving’
