A good samaritan was stabbed when he went to a man's aid.
The 21-year-old was walking from Chichester University student halls when he spotted a man who appeared drunk and staggering around in Graylingwell Drive
As he approached him to check if he was OK, the man assaulted him causing a wound to his stomach.
It is though that some form of weapon was used to inflict the wound. He then ran from the scene.
The incident happened at 8.30pm on Tuesday.
Detective Sergeant Colin O'Hare said: 'This appears to be a completely unprovoked and random assault and we are very keen to trace this man.'
The suspect is described as white, 6ft, of lean build, with a thin face and full lips. He was wearing a thigh-length textile jacket, buttoned up and tight-fitting with the collar up, and dark coloured jeans.
He was also wearing a black baseball cap.
