A man has died in a fire at Ryde on the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire Police said they received a call shortly after 1pm today to a blaze at Tredegar House in Wood Street,

A spokesman said: ‘Initial enquiries are underway to establish the cause and circumstances of the fire.

‘We’re now in a position to confirm that one man has died.

‘Formal identification and a post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

‘Other residents have been evacuated to Ryde police station where they are giving witness statements to police.

‘No arrests have been made.’
