A CAR roof was cut off by firefighters to free a trapped man in the early hours of this morning.

Two cars – a Seat Ibiza and Volkswagen Passat – were involved in an accident at 12.30am today.

The incident happened in Southampton Road, Portchester.

Two fire engines and the special equipment unit from Cosham were sent to the scene.

Watch manager Andy Marsh said: ‘There was a casualty trapped inside a car and the ambulance service asked us to cut the roof off.

‘So we took the roof off the car and helped get the man out.’

Crews were there for almost an hour.

Hampshire Constabulary were also called, who put a road block in place until 2pm.

They say one man suffered serious injuries that are not thought to be life threatening.
