A MAN’S body was found in trapped in mud flats in Portchester.
The body was discovered by coastguards in Wicormarine, in Cranleigh Road, at 6.30pm yesterday.
Coastguards called out police, fire crews and the ambulance service to assist with the retrieval of the body.
It took emergency services around an hour to get the body out of the mud flats and safely onto the shore.
The man was declared dead at the scene.
His death is not being treated as suspicious and investigations to find out how he got there are still going on.
Ambulance crews took the body to Queen Alexandra Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
Police officers believe they have identified the man and think he is in his 40s and from the area.
He is thought to have been seen talking to another member of the public, alive and well, on Saturday evening.
Next of kin have been informed and reports are being prepared for the coroner.
A spokeswoman for Hampshire Constabulary said: ‘We’re not sure how long the body had been there.
‘It’s not thought to have been very long – it’s a matter of hours rather than days.
‘The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.’
Police have not released the name of the man.
