HE has completed the Three Peaks Challenge, crossed the finish line of Tough Mudder and Lee McDonald can now add reaching the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to his list of accomplishments.

The 40-year-old climbed the Tanzania mountain in October and has raised more than £2,000 for The Rowans Hospice.

Considering just a couple hours before I was ready to stop, getting to the summit was the most fantastic feeling

Lee McDonald

Lee, managing director of Fareham-based firm Omnia, had always wanted to do the feat and described reaching the top at 19,340ft as fantastic.

He said: ‘I like to do a challenge each year and for a while now I have wanted to climb Kilimanjaro.

‘I started thinking that I have to just do it rather than talking about it.

‘I was lucky enough to be able to fund the trip myself so I got advice on how to do it from an author who used to be a guide there and booked it.’

It took Lee seven days to reach the summit and he said about 90 minutes from the top, he almost gave up.

‘On the summit day I got really dehydrated and I needed oxygen,’ he added.

‘There were just three of us left after the other two in our group stopped after day three and I was so close to just stopping.

‘But we were only about 90 minutes from the summit and I pushed myself to continue.

‘When I reached the top, it was fantastic. Considering just a couple hours before I was ready to stop, getting to the summit was the most fantastic feeling.’

Lee’s efforts have seen him raise around £2,500 for The Rowans Hospice, in Purbrook.

He decided to fundraise for the hospice as they have cared for friends and family of his over the past few years.

He said: ‘The work they do is amazing and everyone in the area knows someone who has been cared for by the Rowans.

‘We have asked our clients to make donations and we held a networking event to try and boost money too.

‘I am pleased with how much has been donated but I am hoping to add a bit more to that.’

Lee is now looking ahead to his next challenge and said he would like to do the Seven Summits challenge which would see him climb the seven tallest mountains on each continent.
