Have your say

IT’S amazing what can be done with some straw, some old clothes and a generous dose of imagination.

Whether it’s Mary Poppins, Henry VIII, or Colonel Gaddafi, this year’s Hayling Scarecrow Festival includes a fascinating mix of weird and wonderful creations.

As the theme this year is partnership, one entry is a straw man proposing to a straw woman.

This is the fifth year the island has gone crazy for scarecrows and there have been a total of 101 entries

A judging panel yesterday went through every single entry and chose the best scarecrows for five categories, including the most comical, topical, historical, the best film or theatre-inspired entry and the people’s choice award.

The winners will be announced on Saturday at Hayling Carnival.

Over the course of the next week, people are being invited to tour the island and find the scarecrows.

Colin Telford, one of the organisers from Hayling’s BEST market town initiative, said: ‘It’s probably the biggest single participation event on the island.

‘It’s the one event of the year where everyone can take part.

‘Last year we had 4,500 people taking the trail and this year it will probably will be same.’

Trail sheets are available from Hayling Island Bookshop, Terracotta Pot Shop, Hayling Island Tourist Information Centre, Relatively Crafty, Paige’s Fishing Tackle, Stoke Fruit Farm, Hayling Library, J & K Supermarket and Hayling Island Holiday Park.
