Cllr Ponsonby said: ‘As mayor, I get invited to lots of events, my calendar for December is rather chock-a-block.

‘It is part of the mayor’s role to try to visit every place of worship in the borough, and that is something I’m really looking forward to doing.

‘It truly is amazing to see what goes on in these communities. They do so much for other people so it only seems right to meet them and worship with them.’

Father Mike Sheffield, parish priest at St George’s Church, said: ‘The word Advent means coming, and is the season when the church prepares for the coming of Jesus at Christmas.

‘People will be familiar with Advent calendars but in addition we light candles and have special services. We would love to see you at our carol service this Sunday to start your countdown to Christmas with a lovely service.’

Chris Gadd, a member of St George’s, explained that this time of year is rather hectic for the church, yet exciting at the same time.

He said: ‘This is always a very exciting and busy time of year for the church.

‘We have our Christmas bazaar on Saturday December 3, we have a big Christmas tree delivered to the church on which the names of the departed will be hung on gold stars.

‘We also have our annual light for life service in aid of Naomi House on December 7 and we have local schools coming for their own carol services.’
