A MECHANICAL failure caused delays both on and off the water as the Wightlink Ferry service was brought to a halt.

The car ferry between Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight was stopped yesterday at around 3.30pm following a fault with the linkspan at Gunwharf Quays. The linkspan is used to gets vehicles on and off the ferry.

The problem caused delays on the roads around Gunwharf as cars waiting to use the ferry were stopped while it was fixed and a test carried out to ensure it was working.

Service had returned to normal by 7pm last night.
