HUGO Van Der Walt took over the running of The Wyvern with his wife Lenka in 2009.

The 27-year-old moved to England from Ermelo in South Africa to start a career in the pub trade.

He said: ‘What it was that drew me over here was the pub culture there is in the UK.

‘You don’t have anything like that in South Africa, it’s just not the same.

‘You don’t get real ale, just lagers and spirits.

‘I really liked the pubs and everything about the culture is great so I decided to move over here and get involved.’

Hugo began working in the kitchens at a pub just outside Reading before working his way up to assistant manager.

It was there he met Lenka and after getting married the pair decided to take over the running of their own pub.

Lenka, 28, said: ‘It’s not something I had ever thought of doing before.

‘I used to be an au pair and had not worked in the pub trade like this.

‘But I am really starting to enjoy it.

‘The customers make it worth it at the end of the day.

‘When I see the smiles on their faces I realise how much I do actually enjoy what I’m doing.

‘Plus I still get to interact with kids which I really enjoy.’
