THE Hughes scoured the country to find the perfect pub.
And once they stepped foot inside Portsmouth they knew they had found that place.
Karen Hughes, and husband Simon, 44, used to live in Wales when they decided they wanted their own pub.
But determined not to settle for just any venue, the couple looked at various locations in England.
And from the first time the couple saw the Admiral Drake pub, in Silverlock Close, Buckland, they decided it was the perfect location.
Karen, 42, explains: ‘We decided we wanted our own pub and went for this one.
‘We had looked all over the country and there was nowhere else we would like to be.
‘It was the nicest place we had seen and we still think that, which is why we’re here 17 years later.
‘We have a good bunch of people that would do anything for everybody and look out for everyone.’
Since moving in almost two decades ago the family have worked hard to create a family-orientated pub.
‘We’re very family-friendly,’ added Karen.
‘We hold Christmas parties for children and at our annual Drakefest music festival we make sure there are children’s activities to entertain them.’
And the owners are happy to carry on pulling pints in Portsmouth.
‘We’ve been here 17 years and we’ve had an amazing time,’ said Karen.
‘We want to stay on for as long as we can.
‘The customers are always friendly, we love organising Drakefest and we can’t imagine being anywhere else.’
