MARTIN Chandler moved to Portsmouth just over three years ago to be near the coast.
The 41-year-old has worked in bars, nightclubs and hotels for 23 years.
Before heading to the city, he ran nightclubs in Poole and Swindon, but decided staying up until 4am every night was losing its appeal.
He said: ‘When I got out of the nightclub business we decided we would like to live near the coast.
‘Working in pubs is something I have always loved doing – I’ve been doing it since I was 18.
‘I decided that I really enjoyed it and wanted to go full time. I quickly climbed the ladder and ended up working as the bar manager in a hotel.
‘Then I got into nightclubs and when I felt I was getting a bit old for that I found this place.’
Martin lives at the pub with his fiancee – who he is marrying in a couple of months – and three young children.
‘The thing that sets this pub apart is the brilliant team,’ he said. ‘From the bar staff to the kitchens and everyone else they work hard to make the pub a success.’
Martin added that he believes – but isn’t sure – that his pub is more than 90 years old.
‘I’ve not had much luck finding out about its history,’ he said. ‘If anyone has any old pictures they should get in touch.’
