Michael goes to great steam shed in the sky

A fortnight ago I wrote about the well-known local railway author Michael Harvey, who had died.

His funeral was held at Portchester Crematorium last Monday and the turn-out was amazing.

More than 150 mourners attended and Andrew Searson, of Searson’s Family Funeral Company, gave a superb 30-minute oration on the life of the much-loved author who travelled the length and breadth of the country to see and photograph his beloved steam locomotives.

His books include Diary Of A Trainspotter, Forget The Anorak and Fratton Locomotive Depot. The books sold in their thousands.

The non-religious ceremony finished with the sound of a steam engine leaving a station and the Travelling Wilburys singing End Of The Line.

Afterwards, many retired with Michael’s family to the Hampshire Rose at Widley.

Anyone wishing to make a donation for the fight against Parkinson’s on behalf of Michael can do so through Searson’s.
