TRADE unions across Portsmouth will gather at a workers’ memorial to observe a minute’s silence for those killed and injured at work next week.

This year’s theme is ‘Protecting workers around the world through strong regulation, enforcement and union rights’.

The TUC has said the day should be used to highlight the need for strong regulation at a national, European and global level.

A gathering will be held on Monday at Victoria Park in Portsmouth from 11.45am.

Jon Woods, chairman of Portsmouth Trades Council, said: ‘We need to stop companies in the UK from benefitting from the lack of health and safety standards that lead to disasters such as the Bangladesh factory collapse that killed more than 1,100 workers.

‘We also need a strong strategy on health and safety from the European Commission.’
