MORE than 1,000 local schoolchildren are to take part in Portsmouth City Council’s schools Christmas carol concert

Children from 33 schools will sing on the Guildhall steps from 6.30pm to 7.15pm on Monday.

The free annual event will include a visit from Santa, who will greet the children and mingle with the audience.

The Lord Mayor of Portsmouth Steven Wylie will switch on the lights on the Guildhall Square Christmas tree.

Music will come from the Salvation Army Portsmouth Citadel Band, with the Portsmouth Music Service conducting the schools.

Each school has been asked to donate two presents, which will be collected by Santa’s elves at the event and later given out to disadvantaged children across the city.

A competition was held to design the front cover of the concert programme. The winner was Esme Long, nine, of Craneswater Junior School.
