POLICE have responded to a photograph that allegedly shows a driver playing guitar at the wheel.

A bus passenger who was travelling on the A27, in Chichester, last week snapped the man apparently strumming the electric guitar while driving along the busy dual carriageway.

It has been shared thousands of times on social media which prompted police to make a statement.

No formal complaint has been made to Sussex Police, but Inspector Stewart Goodwin, of the Arun road policing unit, said: ‘I have seen the photograph.

‘Unfortunately there is no vehicle registration number, nor is it clear if the person with the guitar is actually the driver.

‘However, it is perhaps an opportunity to underline the message that motorists should never do anything that distracts them from driving while on the move or in traffic.’

The person who took the photos was Nichola Carr.

The driver was wearing a suit as he played a tune on what appeared to be a five-string Warwick bass guitar worth approximately £500.

Ms Carr captioned the photo: ‘I did not know you could drive and play the guitar.’

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph Neil Greig, director of policy and research at the Institute of Advanced Motorists said: ‘You cannot drive and play the guitar at the same time.

‘We always say you cannot do two things at once if one of them is driving – this is the first time I have heard of someone playing guitar at the wheel.’
