ROADWORKS continued to cause problems for motorists over the weekend as heavy traffic built up on the A3M yesterday.

The Farlington Viaduct was closed southbound from 6pm on Saturday until 6am this morning.

It is the third weekend that parts of the A3M have been closed by the Highways Agency as it undertakes maintenance work which began last month and is expected to last until May.

The work is taking place to replace a deteriorating 30-year-old expansion joint in the bridge. Some cars were stuck in big queues for around 40 minutes as traffic built up between Junctions 3 and 5 southbound.

A diversion route was in place during the closure.

The entry slip road at Junction 4 on the A3M southbound carriageway was also closed.

During the week, work will be carried out between 10pm and 6am, when traffic flows are at their lowest.

There is expected to be one further weekend closure.
