MP backs bid to get kids reading this summer

A charity reading campaign has been backed in parliament.

Fareham MP Suella Fernandes is urging primary school children across the area to take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.

Each year, around 780,000 children use their summer off school to borrow, read and talk about their favourite books.

This year’s challenge, called ‘The Big Friendly Read’, is being organised in connection with the Roald Dahl estate.

Ms Fernandes said: ‘Encouraging children to read for pleasure is hugely important, so I’m delighted to support this campaign. There can’t be many better authors than Roald Dahl to show children that books can be fun and exciting, so this year’s challenge should be a huge success.

‘I hope parents, grandparents and carers in Fareham will take their children to the library to sign up.’

To take part in the event, children can head to their nearest library and sign up with the aim to borrow and read at least six books over the summer.
