In an effort to celebrate maturity and encourage older Gosport residents to get out and about, Older Persons Month involves lots of events around the town and marks several special days.

UN International Day of Older Persons, UK Older People’s Day and Silver Sunday will all be marked.

Staff at Gosport Borough Council have worked closely with Gosport Older Persons Forum and local organisations and groups, to fill the whole month with events.

This includes the annual Joint 55+ Info Fest and Winter Warmth event, which will take place on Friday, October 21 at Thorngate Hall.

There will be lots of information about a broad range of organisations, local services and social activities.

And there will be help with keeping warm and well during the winter along with fun interactive demonstrations.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service will also be at the event to carry out electric blanket safety checks.

Ms Dinenage spoke in support of Older Persons Month.

She said: ‘I am so pleased that Gosport Borough Council is working to promote social engagement among the older generation and reduce loneliness.

‘Loneliness affects many older people in our area and is really a huge cause for concern.

‘I am very proud of all the work that is now taking place across Gosport to tackle this.
