A three-year-old girl and her mother were taken to hospital after they were bitten by a dog.

The victims, from Chichester, were in an underpass on Fishbourne Road West, Fishbourne, when the child was attacked by the American Bulldog.

She suffered bites and cuts to the right side of her face before the mother was able to lift her into the air and out of reach of the dog.

The animal then bit the mother repeatedly on the right arm and dragged her to the ground.

A passer-by picked up the young girl and lifted her out of the reach of the dog.

The dog was then distracted by schoolchildren who shouted until a woman took it away.

The dog was later handed in after its owner agreed for it to be put down.
