NATIONAL: Number of nurses and midwives leaving profession up by 51 per cent in four years
New statistics show the number of nurses and midwives leaving their profession has risen dramatically.
Figures from the Nursing and Midwifery Council show the numbers of those leaving the profession has risen by 51 per cent in just four years – with those below retirement age citing poor working conditions and low pay.
The numbers mean for the first time in recent history more midwives and nurses are quitting than joining, with homegrown UK nurses comprising the majority of staff losses.
Between 2016 and 2017, it is understood 20 per cent more people left the registrar than joined it, with the figure at 45 per cent for those first registered in the UK.
