A SMELL of electrical burning led to parts of a Royal Navy base being evacuated.

The alarm was raised at HMS Collingwood in Newgate Lane, Fareham today at 2.45pm.

A member of staff pushed the emergency button after smelling electrical burning in the kitchen at the senior rates mess.

Three appliances from Gosport and Fareham fire stations went to the scene but could not discover the cause.

An investigation is now under way.

Elsewhere, fire crews from Gosport, Portchester and Cosham were called to reports of a person stuck in a lift at Raglan Court, in Gordon Road, Gosport.

However when they arrived at 3pm, they were no longer needed.
