A COUNCIL will put in new mini-bins along Gosport’s seafront in an effort to stop littering.

The borough council will install the 25 new bins along the promenade in Lee-on-the-Solent after the leader of a litter group suggested them to the authority.

Graham Smith, co-ordinator of Lee-on-the-Solent Litteraction and Marine Conservation Society told the council about rubbish-busting firm Zilch, which has now provided the bins for free.

The firm has also provided mats for people to stub out cigarettes before putting them in a bin, aiming to reduce the risk of bin fires.

The council will trial the bins, which will be put in the gaps between existing ones.

Mr Smith said: ‘I’m pleased that they’re going to use them. It’s free for the council and if they like them they can buy more.’

Councillor Graham Burgess, chair of the Community Board, said littering is a blot on Lee-on-the-Solent’s landscape and that he will help install the bins on Monday, February 25.
