A NEW tennis facility is almost open and ready for use.

Portsmouth’s new tennis centre, based near Mountbatten Centre, in Alexandra Park, Stamshaw, will provide new facilities for anyone interested in tennis.

The venue will include four new indoor courts, six outdoor courts and eight indoor mini tennis courts with free car parking.

Councillor Lee Hunt, Portsmouth City Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: ‘After the London Olympic gold medal success for Andy Murray and winning silver in the mixed doubles with Laura Robson, then his American Open Grand Slam and Wimbledon wins, it’s a really exciting time for British tennis.

‘By working with British Tennis and city partners our council is helping to create facilities which rank amongst some of the best for grassroots players in the UK.

‘We’re hoping to encourage people who may not have tried tennis before to come along and have a go.’

The centre is set to be officially opened on November 11.
