The debut performance of a brand new youth orchestra in Gosport hit a high note with audience members.

Elson Youth Orchestra, which premiered a collection of light-hearted pieces at a school concert on Wednesday, played to a packed hall.

Membership of the orchestra will be open to the whole community but it currently consists of school members only.

Carole Gratton, chairwoman of the governors, said: 'The whole evening was an absolute delight and thrilled the assembled audience of proud parents, families and invited guests.

'It was obvious from the smiles and expressions on the children's faces how very much they were enjoying themselves on stage too.'

A retiring collection and the sale of drinks and merchandise raised a total of 163.06 towards violin lessons at the school, which are offered free to all the school's year three to six pupils.
