The fort was opened yesterday by Isle of Wight’s Lord Lieutenant Martin White with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and follows the revamp of Spitbank fort.

A champagne bottle was smashed by Mike Clare, the chairman of Amazing Venues, which owns all three forts. Mr Clare is the founder of the bed company Dreams.

He said: ‘This fort is a lot bigger than Spitbank and has 23 rooms rather than eight, so we get have more people.

‘There’s lots to do and each of the rooms have been decorated by my wife Carol.

‘We have tried to keep the feel of the fort as much as possible.

‘Work will now start on the third fort – Horse Sands – which will be a time capsule and museum.

Guests arrived by boat from Gunwharf Quays and were greeted with champagne.

Councillor Donna Jones, leader of Portsmouth City Council, said: ‘The fort is an absolutely fantastic addition to the cultural offering in Portsmouth.

‘Portsmouth has been in search of a five-star hotel and this facility is five-star plus and accessible through the city.’

Portsmouth Lord Mayor Councillor Steven Wylie said: ‘What I love about the fort is the history it is steeped in, and for me that’s been the most enjoyable part.’

Lunch experiences start from £99 per person for four courses and includes return boat transfers from Gunwharf Quays.

An overnight stay starts from £450 per room per night.

This includes a welcome glass of champagne on arrival, lunch, dinner, a full English breakfast, plus access to most facilities on the fort and travel to and from the venue from Gunwharf Quays.
