Opening night of Portsmouth Oktoberfest goes down a storm

The event brought across from the original concept in Munich, attracted thousands of people to indulge in German lagers and dance to world-famous umpa bands.

Organised by Andy Marsh and James Ralls, who are also the founders of Victorious Festival, Oktoberfest transformed Guildhall Square into a beer hall.

Andy said: ‘We started planning it this time last year and we really thought that it could work.

‘It is amazing that we have been able to get this iconic place to host it.

‘Anyone who is coming today should expect a great time. We would love to do more and more things down here.’

Scott Millet, who attended in a party of five, and spoke highly of the organisation that was put into the event.

Scott, from Southsea, said: ‘It is really fantastic and these guys are really changing Portsmouth.

‘Southampton may have the docks and the ships, but Portsmouth have the culture and there has been a renaissance over of the city.’

Matt Gallagher added: ‘I’m really impressed by how they have set up here and how they have integrated the steps and statue.’
