A proud day for Portsmouth, but one tinged with sadness

It was fantastic to see the coverage of the new Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier being named at the end of last week.

This city should rightly be proud of its involvement in building her.

Certainly I shall remember seeing sections of her hull being joined up until I’m doddery – and then I shall probably bore everyone in the nursing home about the times I was in the giant BAE Systems shipbuilding hall.

It was a proud day, but it was still tinged with sadness that no other warship will be made in Portsmouth.

Sure, the two carriers will be based here, and maintained here, providing jobs for thousands of people.

But it’s not quite the same as knowing the battleships of the future will be made here too.
