ZELLA COMPTON: Looking afresh at our beautiful spot in the world

Have your say

We had the perfect vantage point to wave off the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race – aboard the 5pm car ferry from Fishbourne to Portsmouth!

As we approached Stokes Bay, the yachts were heading our way with HMS Illustrious stood by, anchored off Gilkicker Point.

Hats off to the Clipper crews, some of whom have never sailed before. After a few experiences racing during Cowes Week, I know it will be a baptism of fire.

To put it into context, I remember the great adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, a man who removed parts of his own frost-bitten fingers with a chainsaw, saying that sailing around Cape Horn was his worst experience.
