BBC Radio Solent breakfast crew get into a spin | Lou Hannan

I’ve finally done it. After a year of empty chat and procrastination, I’ve actually joined a gym!

I’m aware you might be reading this thinking ‘so what?’

However, this is a really big deal for me.

I HATED sport at school – I was the last to be picked in hockey. Given I barely understood which end of the stick to hold, this was not a surprise.

And when it came to netball, I didn’t know my wing defence from my goal attack.

I’d don the bib and adopt a slightly stooped stance as I side-stepped back and forth, not having a clue what was going on and praying that the ball didn’t come anywhere near me.

So, as you can tell, team sport is really not my thing.

Being of the generation where there was very little option to do anything at school other than the aforementioned netball, hockey or, if we were really unlucky, cross-country running, it scarred me for life and gave me the opinion that exercise is the devil’s work.

I’m painting the picture of being very unfit, which isn’t true.

I walk loads, dance and rarely sit still, but now my mid-forties are approaching fast, I figured the time has arrived to tackle my exercise phobia.

Given my shift pattern at work has changed too, I think the mega-early starts will really take their toll unless I look after myself and we’re constantly being told that regular exercise actually gives you more energy.

Being somewhat thrifty, this whole new chapter has included weeks of research to ensure I:

a) don’t get tied into some mad contract for the next year and b) don’t begrudge every single second of being in the gym thinking of how many cream cakes I could be buying instead.

The great thing about the new year is there are a fair few offers on and so, for just more than £20 a month and no contract, I’ve signed up to a place on my way home from work.

If I drive past it every day, I’m definitely going to go, surely?!

So, tomorrow’s the big day and even better, Alun, my co-presenter, has signed up, too.

We’ve enrolled for our first class so I shall report back on how it was Spinning with Cheryl!
