Hands up who thinks the sailing at Cowes Week is just for fun and is full of wealthy people mucking about on the water?

Well, it can be a serious business when things go wrong. For example, look on YouTube for footage of the yacht that failed to see a massive bright orange oil tanker this week and ploughed into it, losing its rigging and two crew overboard.

Twenty years ago a hydrofoil ferry hit a yacht with awful consequences, while another serious incident led to all car ferries berthed at East Cowes having ropes hanging over the side to stop yachts and crew members getting pulled under into the propellers. I think I’ll stick to spectating...
