Regular readers will know that I’m a bit of a spotter when it comes to ferries. I’ve been on plenty of them, particularly the ones that get me across the harbour from Gosport to Portsmouth and back.

The wonderfully-maintained Portsmouth Queen and Gosport Queen are now 45 years old. But with their trusty Gardner engines, they have crossed the harbour many thousands of times.

It’s amazing to think they entered service in the same year that England won the football World Cup and paddle steamers were still a familiar sight in the Solent.

They certainly knew how to build ships to last in those days. I wonder if vessels being built today will survive as long?
