Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman can adopt her most contrite expression and say sorry as often as she likes – but there’s no disguising a career catastrophe.

She deserves the odium being heaped upon her for coming up with the absurd idea of privatising England’s forests.

With all the cutting and burning going on around her, she thought it a perfect opportunity to earn brownie points from Number Ten.

But she proved herself drastically out of touch with the strength of public feeling on the matter.

Now David Cameron must replace her with someone who can see the woods for the trees.
