You’ve probably never heard of Andre Cassagnes, but you or someone in your family has at some point in their childhood played with his creation.

Andre, who recently passed away at the age of 86, invented the classic drawing toy Etch A Sketch in 1960.

It was trumpeted by a TV ad that made it an instant hit with youngsters.

I spent hours with my magic screen, twiddling the two dials trying to perfect writing my name and drawing circles.

The workings were simple. You drew something, then shook the screen and your images magically disappeared for you to begin all over again.

The wonder may now be somewhat overshadowed by computer games, but I’ve still got mine!
