What a disappointing day I spent in Birmingham last week.
Although I asked loads of people for directions at the train station and on the way to where I was going, I didn’t get to hear one word of the infamous Brummie accent.
I’ve never been to Birmingham before, except to change trains, and this lack of anything resembling the legendary lilt I’ve heard pilloried on TV disappointed me as I wanted to experience the real thing for myself.
I mentioned this in my meeting (I found the place OK) and was told that the city is now very cosmopolitan and the Brummie accent isn’t found in the centre any more.
What a shame. I wonder if the same thing is happening to the south coast ‘twang’.
Is it slowly turning into just another urban drawl?
